Making a board without a template is not encouraged. This template will help you drill over 200 holes precisely and is designed to work with a regular 1/8" drill bit. Brad point bits are good, and so are the fancy self-centering drill bits, but you can get away with just using a regular 1/8" drill bit. The template can also be used as a router guide to trim excess material on a router table or shaper. The template will come with a paper backer that prevents scratching during shipping, it can be easily peeled off before use.
